Bicol faces significant rise in dengue cases

By Rhaydz B. Barcia

THE dengue cases in Bicol have reached alarming levels, with a 40 percent increase and at least seven deaths reported this year, according to the Department of Health Bicol Center for Health Development (DOH Bicol CHD).

Data released by DOH Bicol indicate that dengue cases in the region have risen by 40 percent compared to last year, with seven reported deaths. From January to July 13, 2024, Sorsogon reported three deaths, while Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, and Legazpi City each reported one death.

The health department recorded a total of 715 dengue cases from January 1 to July 13, 2024, compared to 512 cases in the same period in 2023. Among the six provinces in Bicol, Camarines Sur reported the highest number of cases with 248, followed by Camarines Norte with 170, Catanduanes with 121, Albay with 67, Sorsogon with 62, Masbate with 43, and others with 4.

In response to the rising dengue cases, DOH Bicol urged the public and local officials to enhance stakeholder engagement and community participation in dengue prevention and control programs across the region. The increase in cases is attributed to the proliferation of mosquito breeding sites due to the rainy season.

Early-stage dengue infection can cause symptoms such as headache, vomiting, diarrhea, and flushed skin. Warning signs include abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, fluid accumulation, bleeding, liver enlargement, and a decreasing platelet count.

Dengue fever is characterized by sudden high fever, severe headache, and pain behind the eyes, muscles, and joints. Some individuals may develop rashes and experience bleeding in various parts of the body.

Dengue is transmitted by day-biting mosquitoes that lay eggs in stagnant water found in containers like flower vases, cans, rain barrels, and old tires. These mosquitoes often rest in dark or murky places. Dengue is a viral infection caused by the dengue virus (DENV), with four serotypes making it possible to be infected four times.

There is no specific treatment for dengue or severe dengue. However, early detection and access to proper medical care can reduce fatality rates to below 1%. The public is advised to follow the 4S strategy: Search and Destroy, Self-Protection Measures, Seek Early Consultation, and Support Fogging or Spraying.

Globally, the incidence of dengue has grown dramatically, putting about half of the world’s population at risk. Although an estimated 100-400 million infections occur each year, over 80% are generally mild and asymptomatic.

Effective vector control measures, combined with sustained community involvement, are essential for dengue prevention and control. While many DENV infections cause only mild illness, some can develop into a potentially lethal condition known as severe dengue.
