DOH reports 36 fireworks-related injuries in Bicol Region

LEGAZPI CITY --- The Department of Health in Bicol (DOH-5) reported 36 fireworks-related injuries (FRWIs) as of Thursday.


According to the report, these cases were recorded in the provinces of Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Albay, and Naga City from Dec. 21 to Dec. 31, 2024.


Eight of the victims received treatment at the Bicol Medical Center, 12 at the Bicol Regional Hospital and Medical Center, eight at the Camarines Norte Provincial Hospital, one at the Bicol Region General Hospital and Geriatric Medical Center, three at the Naga City Hospital, and four at the Josefina Belmonte Duran Albay Provincial Hospital.


The types of fireworks involved in these incidents included kwitis (mini rocket), five-star firecracker, “bawang,” sparklers, whistle bombs, and boga (improvised cannon).


Of the 36 victims, 34 were sent home after receiving medical attention, while two required hospitalization for further care.


DOH reports said that the youngest victim was a three-year-old male, while the oldest was a 67-year-old, who was separately injured using the five-star firecracker.


Among the 36 injured, 31 were males and five were females. (PNA)
