‘E-dalaw’ for PDLs in Bicol gets boost

LEGAZPI CITY --- The virtual visitation or “e-dalaw” program for persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) in the Bicol Region is expected to get a boost with the acquisition of new communication devices.
In an interview on Monday, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Bicol (BJMP-5) community relations service officer Senior Jail Officer 1 Ruth Castor said this would be made possible by the 18 tablet devices recently donated by the Department of Information Communication Technology in Bicol (DICT-5).
“It increases the number of computers and gadgets we are using for the program. With the 18 additional tablets, the program will be strengthened since they now have more devices. It increases and maintains healthy relations with their families,” she said.
Castor said all communication going through the e-dalaw service is strictly monitored and supervised by the duty jail officer for security reasons.
“Hindi po sila ang tatawag, kami po yung magko-contact and then ibibigay sa kanila, supervised, hindi po pwede personal na messenger (They will not be the one to call, we will be the one to call them under supervision),” she said.
Castor said that through the newly acquired devices, PDLs can now get in touch with their family and friends who might be unable to visit them in person.
“For the Bicol Region, we have 3,672 PDLs in the 29 jail facilities in the region. The tablets were already distributed to various jail facilities in the six provinces,” she added.
The tablet devices were distributed in jail facilities in the following areas: Sorsogon City and Irosin town in Sorsogon province; Masbate City, Aroroy, Mobo, Placer, Cataingan in Masbate province; Daet in Camarines Norte province; and Camalig, Pio Duran, Sto. Domingo, Oas, and Guinobatan in Albay province. (with a report from Angelica Serrano, OJT/PNA)
