EDITORIAL: Duterte Dynasty

IN a surprising announcement on June 25, Vice President Sara Duterte revealed that her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, and her two brothers, Paolo and Sebastian, plan to run for Senate seats in the 2025 elections.

Furthermore, she disclosed that her mother, Elizabeth Zimmerman, is pushing for Sebastian to run for president in 2028, while encouraging Sara to return to Davao as mayor.

This revelation, made during the Office of the Vice President’s Pride Reception in Cagayan de Oro, caught many off guard. Zimmerman, who has historically stayed out of the political spotlight, now appears to be a significant influence on the political ambitions of her children.

Sara’s frequent mentions of her mother’s directives have raised eyebrows, considering Zimmerman’s previous detachment from the political maneuverings of her ex-husband and their offspring.

Sara clarified that there has been no discussion about her resigning as Vice President, despite speculations that her return to Davao might signal a strategic political move. Her brothers’ candidacies, however, signal a concerted effort to re-establish the Duterte name in Philippine politics.

Paolo Duterte, the current representative of Davao City’s 1st District, aims for a Senate seat, while Sebastian, Davao City’s youngest mayor, is not only eyeing the Senate but is also being groomed for a presidential run in 2028.

Sebastian’s political activities, including his vocal opposition to the Marcos Jr. administration and leading the Maisug rallies, have positioned him as a significant figure in the political landscape. The push for his presidential bid suggests a long-term strategy for the Duterte family to maintain and expand their influence.

However, this ambitious political blueprint has not been met without criticism. Akbayan, a political group, labeled the Vice President’s revelation as “reeking of desperation.” The idea of the Duterte family dominating the political scene again may be seen as a move to consolidate power rather than a genuine effort to serve the public.

The upcoming 2025 elections and the potential 2028 presidential bid of Sebastian Duterte will undoubtedly be critical junctures for the Duterte family and the political future of the Philippines. The electorate will have to decide whether this move represents a return to effective governance or a desperate attempt to cling to power.
