SORSOGON CITY --- As Women’s Month ends, the agency responsible for implementing social welfare policies and programs in Sorsogon states that discussions about gender equality and protection must continue.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) commemorated Women’s Month in Sorsogon by hosting a symposium focused on the laws that combat sexual harassment and violence against women and children.
The aim was to encourage open dialogue about these important issues.
Despite being sensitive and, for some, potentially traumatic topics, DSWD social worker Glenda Navarro emphasized that discussing them is crucial for women’s empowerment.

“We want you to continue learning about the laws that protect against abuse.
These topics must be discussed regularly to increase societal awareness,” Navarro said to the more than 500 members of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) who attended the symposium.
Navarro was referring to RA 9262, the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act, and RA 11313, the Safe Spaces Act.
During the discussion of these laws, Police Master Sergeant Ira Domalayas presented real-life scenarios and practical advice on how victims can identify and report abusive situations.
Domalayas highlighted various forms of abuse, including physical violence, emotional and psychological violence, financial abuse, behavioral control—such as isolating oneself from friends and family—and sexual violence, which may involve monitoring a person’s movements.
Lorna Gabrentina, a beneficiary of the 4Ps program, praised the government for educating her on how women can contribute to integrating into traditionally male-dominated sectors of society.
“Discussions like this enhance our understanding of our roles in nation-building,” she stated.
Navarro emphasized the importance of ongoing conversations about gender equality and protection.
“We must keep discussing women’s empowerment every day,” she said. (PIA5/Sorsogon)
