Naga declared under state of calamity

By Jason B. Neola

IN a decisive move to address the severe impact of Typhoon “Enteng,” the Naga City Sangguniang Panlungsod led by Vice Mayor Cecilia V. De Asis has declared the city under a State of Calamity.

The declaration, formalized through Resolution No. 2024-474, was unanimously adopted in a special session by the city council members and approved by Mayor Nelson Legacion.

The city mayor said that placing the city under State of Calamity would allow those in the private sector or any other agencies to be able to claim entitlement to whatever benefits consequent to an event like what the city is facing right now.

He said that the declaration of a State of Calamity will enable LGU Naga to mobilize resources and provide immediate assistance to those affected.

On the afternoon of September 1, 2024, Tropical Depression “Enteng” brought intense rainfall to the Bicol Region, including Naga City, which was placed under Storm Signal No. 1 by PAGASA.

The extraordinary volume of rain led to unprecedented flooding, overwhelming the city’s flood control infrastructure and causing severe inundation in low-lying areas.

The floods have impacted thousands of families, endangering lives and property. The city government, under the directive of Mayor Nelson Legacion, carried out forced evacuations in high-risk areas. Despite these efforts, the disaster has tragically claimed the lives of three residents.

The resolution calls for coordination with constituent barangays, city government agencies, and the Metro Naga Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MNCCI) to ensure an organized and effective response to the calamity.

The city council’s action underscores the urgent need for comprehensive support to mitigate the effects of the flood and aid in the recovery and rebuilding efforts in the wake of the natural disaster.
