LEGAZPI CITY --- The Police Regional Office in Bicol (PRO-5) recorded a relatively peaceful New Year celebration with minimal incidents related to firecracker injuries.
In a report on Wednesday, PRO-5 Director Brig. Gen. Andre Dizon attributed this to the community's comprehensive security preparations and proactive cooperation.
“The success of this year’s New Year celebration is a testament to what we can achieve when law enforcement and the community work hand in hand,” Dizon said.
He noted that the Bicol police were on heightened alert to ensure public safety during the celebrations. The deployment of additional police officers intensified patrolling, and enhanced visibility in public spaces significantly contributed to maintaining peace and order.
Despite the traditional use of fireworks during the New Year celebration, the region reported only 30 firecracker-related injuries.
Among the provinces, Albay recorded the highest number of incidents with 12; Camarines Norte followed with 9; Camarines Sur recorded 7; and Masbate and Naga City each reported one incident.
Dizon said they also conducted a region-wide crackdown on illegal firecrackers, which netted 1,657 improvised “boga” (an illegal device often made of PVC pipes) and 3,433 other types of unauthorized firecrackers.
Bicol police also reported no fire incidents caused by firecrackers, casualties from stray bullets, and illegal firearm discharges.
"This aggressive operation not only prevented potential injuries and accidents but also emphasized the importance of using safe and legal alternatives to celebrate the New Year," Dizon said.
He also thanked the public, local government units, and community stakeholders for their cooperation during the holiday period. (PNA)
