One More Murder

All of a sudden, something else overshadows issues of political harassment, impeachment and campaign for the elections. Although, I think, this one’s more heinous. I can’t say I would rather talk about political intrigue. Can we have neither of these?

Young doctor gets shot in her car just a short distance from the hospital. That area is busy at daytime. But it gets pretty deserted at night. I myself would not walk along that street at night. I don’t think it’s plagued with muggers. It just gives an uneasy feeling. The person of interest is the doctor’s boyfriend.

I would just like to remind the busybodies at office lobbies and waiting areas that this guy is not yet convicted. We’re not really sure whether he was the one who did the shooting. For all we know, he could also be a victim. After all, he is a “person of interest” and not a “suspect”. Maybe, that would change in a few days’ time.

If this man’s innocent, the fact that he’s nowhere to be found and apparently hiding isn’t helping his standing. It would be quick to infer that maybe after shooting his girlfriend, he ran away to avoid arrest. But as of now, we don’t really know, he could have been abducted and have suffered the same fate in some secluded area. Maybe, he knows nothing of it, and out of shock he fled to hide to avoid wrongful accusation and torturous interrogation. We still don’t know for sure. So, let’s keep judgements at bay for a while, or just throw them away for good. The issue could only be settled with investigation.

Well, since we got into investigation, this reminds of the other murder cases around here. What ever happened to them? Officers, have you had your rest this time? There’s another one to solve. Some years ago, there was a sexual assault and murder case of a young female student whose body was found in the provincial capitol complex. What happened to that? More recently, there was a similar case of sexual assault and murder on a dark street in Liboton, Naga City. The victim reportedly showed signs of mutilation. What happened to that? There was a time when an armed man who was being chased by police ran into and took refuge for hours in a major elementary school. That was not murder. But what was that about? Again, what happened to that?

In that case in Pili, I think they arrested someone who turned out to not know any details of the incident which made his guilt questionable. I think, they had to let him go. In that case in Liboton, I remember that the police arrested some pedicab drivers, with the lead focusing on alleged junkie pedicabbies. Months after, I actually overheard pedicab drivers talking about the suspects who apparently happened to be their friends, are being released. I could tell that they were happy with it. (of course, if my friends who were supposedly innocent, would be released from jail, I would also be happy.) We could hazard a guess that the authorities did not have sufficient evidence against them. That case even made it to Raffy Tulfo’s show. That’s a bad sign. People would go to Tulfo only when the authorities are not giving the right solutions to their problems. So, what happened to those cases? Have they caught the culprits? Maybe, they did and it was just not announced to the public. But would not and should not they rightfully announce the resolution of a case to the public, so that we all know that justice has been served?

What happened to that gunman that the police chased into a school? What was that all about? For a day or two, we were warned not to go to school, while the police searched every nook and cranny. What was that about? Was there a shootout? Was it a gang war? Maybe, we’re not supposed to know.

Now, another crime comes along. Will we be asking the same question: “what happened to that?” months from now? I got this feeling that some people in government just want to finish some task or assignment just for the sake of finishing it, not really to resolve the given problem. It doesn’t matter if the answer is correct, just as long as the paper got submitted, and we can all go home now. I hope that is not the case with criminal investigation. I hope this case gets resolved.
