Shear line-hit Bicol families who lost kin get DSWD aid

By Connie Calipay

LEGAZPI CITY --- The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Bicol (DSWD-5) has provided cash and food assistance to the families of those who lost their loved ones from the heavy rainfall triggered by the shear line in Albay province.

In an interview on Tuesday, DSWD-5 Director Norman Laurio said three families from the towns of Bacacay and Jovellar received PHP10,000 each on Feb. 22, while food packs were distributed to 15 families on Feb. 23.

“Right after the incidents last Feb. 21, the DSWD, through the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) Program, provided financial assistance of PHP30,000 to the three families, and our Disaster Response Management Division (DRMD) distributed 15 family food packs (10 FFPs in Bacacay and 5 in Jovellar),” he said.

A pack contained six kilograms of rice, 10 canned goods, and 10 sachets of instant coffee and cereal drinks, ensuring sufficient food needs.

Laurio said aside from the initial assistance, the families will also receive funeral assistance covering the burial expenses.

“For the funeral assistance, the families can get a minimum of PHP10,000 or a maximum of PHP150,000 depending on the assessment conducted by our registered social workers. They will receive the funeral assistance after they submit the necessary documents,” he said.

Laurio added that the DSWD Bicol continues to monitor other individuals and families affected by other disaster-related incidents to ensure that they receive immediate aid. (with a report from Kryselle Perez, OJT/PNA)
