SM City Legazpi ‘bears’ spread joy to kids

By Rhaydz B. Barcia

Over 100 indigent children in Albay received free food and toys before New Year’s Day through the SM Bears of Joy Program of SM City Legazpi, in collaboration with the Philippine Army, Philippine National Police, the provincial government of Albay, and the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas.

Claire Hariri, SM City’s corporate spokesperson, said the initiative aims to share the Christmas spirit with underprivileged families.

“Through the SM Bears of Joy program, SM City Legazpi, together with partner agencies, stakeholders, and local government units (LGUs) of Albay, brought smiles to hundreds of children today. Earlier this season, the program also visited children in Catanduanes, spreading Christmas cheer across the region,” Hariri said.

She explained that the program encourages shoppers to purchase a pair of bears—one to keep and another to donate to a child in need.

This year’s campaign highlighted the strength of collaboration, as local leaders and organizations joined forces with SM Supermalls to bring hope and happiness to young hearts.

“With the Bears of Joy program being a signature embodiment of love and compassion, we are proud to share this wonderful endeavor. It’s a celebration of giving and bringing joy to others, not only in Albay but also in Catanduanes,” Hariri added.

Parents and guardians expressed gratitude, while children delighted in receiving their cuddly new companions.

Army Lt. Col. Angelo Lutera, deputy commanding officer of the 903rd Infantry Brigade, emphasized the importance of partnerships in bringing joy to impoverished families. He also lauded Albay acting governor Baby Glenda Ong-Bongao for supporting the program.

Lt. Col. Joy Villanueva, commanding officer of the 31st Infantry Battalion, revealed that 110 children from Mabunga (Camalig), Ibaugan (Daraga), Bamban (Manito), Salvacion (Jovellar), and Banguerohan (Legazpi City) were chosen as beneficiaries.

“This is the first time they are receiving gifts from us as part of our modified community support and sustainment program,” Villanueva said.

The children, first-time visitors to SM City Legazpi—the largest mall in Southern Luzon—were also given a tour of the mall as part of the festivities.

Albay acting governor Baby Glenda Ong-Bongao, alongside Army and PNP officials, and an SM City executive, hands over bears to 110 children as part of SM City Legazpi’s “Bears of Joy” program, spreading Christmas cheer to indigent families in Albay.
