Surrender of loose firearms seen to minimize violence

LEGAZPI CITY --- At least 62 loose firearms were voluntarily surrendered in the Bicol region in the initial weeks of the gun ban implementation in January, according to the region’s top police officer.

“Every firearm surrendered brings us one step closer to a secure and peaceful election,” said Police Regional Director Brig. Gen. Andre Dizon.
Dizon pointed out that compliance with the gun ban is a “shared responsibility, not just a rule.”
Dizon said that the enforcement of the gun ban will be intensified to combat election-related violence and illegal activities.
He also said that the police will enhance intelligence operations to locate and dismantle private armed groups and criminal networks.
“We are fully committed to securing the democratic process while ensuring that our crime prevention, anti-drug operations, and counter-terrorism efforts remain steadfast,” Dizon said.
“The safety of every Bicolano is our top priority. We will take every possible measure to ensure that this election is free, fair, and peaceful,” Dizon said.
To achieve this goal, the Philippine National Police (PNP) will deploy over 11,000 personnel across the Bicol region to maintain security during the campaign period leading up to the May 12 elections.
Dizon said that he will focus on maximizing the deployment of personnel in identified high-risk areas and at checkpoints, as the campaign period for senatorial candidates and party-list seats began yesterday, January 11.
Some 4,066,662 voters in Bicol will participate in the elections to choose candidates for 1,237 positions.
This includes 12 senators, 16 members of the House of Representatives, six governors, 114 mayors, and numerous other local officials.
The public is encouraged to report any concerns via PRO 5 hotlines 0917-150-7217 and 0917-558-5175. (PIA)
